Outdoor Huckleberry Preschool Class 2024-25

A multi year program for children 2 1/2 - 4 years old (Turns 2 by 6/30/24)
Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 12:00pm
(choose three or four-day attendance as space permits)

For children ready to enjoy a little independence from their parents, our fully outdoor preschool provides a gentle transition from home to school. Our loving atmosphere offers an aesthetically robust sensory environment that engages the children physically, emotionally and imaginatively. Rooted in the Waldorf early childhood foundations of living a healthy rhythm, developing physically through movement, encouraging creative play, nourishing the senses, and inspiring wonder, our program offers discovery-based, hands-on learning.

Our fully out-door program provides the children an opportunity to explore independently, test themselves and to develop friendships. We incorporate baking, drawing, painting and modeling into our week. We have small and large motor skill activities every day.

During our daily circle time and daily story time, Teacher Susie sings and recites verses full of rich language, a precursor to writing. Learning to read and spell begins with phonological awareness - the ability to hear or perceive a spoken word as a sequence of individual sounds.  In the Huckleberry class, the children hear rich language through songs, poems and stories full of alliteration and rhyming.

We provide a nourishing, warm snack, and exposure to nature and to the changing seasons. This has been shown to have a notably positive effect on healthy development.

Our morning Huckleberry Preschool Class is led by expert, early childhood teachers and includes:

  • Lots of learning by doing using real tools: making bread, chopping fruit, cleaning paint jars.

  • Integrated sensory-motor activities, such as digging in the sand, building forts and swinging.

  • Daily circle time to develop musical and oral literacy, with daily puppet stories and seasonal songs integrated with movement.

  • A social, family-style snack time with a warm organic meal, fresh fruit, and real dishes.

  • Outside play every day, rain or shine, in our thoughtfully designed, fully-enclosed play yard, where the children take great delight in planting flowers, hauling loads in wheelbarrows, digging in the large sand pit and climbing on the play structure, activities that develop large motor skills, balance and coordination.

Our Three Day Preschool is Monday - Wednesday, 9 am - 12 pm.

Our Four Day Preschool is Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 12 pm.

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."
